Our Story
Bowmont Wholesale Meats Ltd. is a proudly family-owned business serving Southland and Central Otago with top-quality meat products. Our history dates back to the early 1930s, when Jack Flynn began selling meat from his van in Tisbury. What started as a small local venture has grown into one of Southland’s most trusted wholesale meat suppliers. Today, John and Judith Flynn, along with two of their sons, continue to lead the business with the same values of hard work, quality, and service that Jack built his reputation on. With over 80 years of experience in the trade, the Flynn family remains committed to supplying the best meats to customers across New Zealand.
Resilience and Dedication
In December 2004, a devastating fire destroyed Bowmont’s original processing plant. Faced with this enormous setback, the Bowmont team — along with their families — rolled up their sleeves and immediately began the clean-up. By the following Monday, a small section of the new plant was up and running, and not a single customer order was missed. This spirit of resilience and dedication continues to define how we do business today.
What We Do
Bowmont Wholesale Meats Ltd. processes and supplies a full range of quality meats, including:
Beef – Specialising in Hereford Prime for consistent, premium quality.
Lamb and Pork – Sourced to the same high standards of quality and value.
Smallgoods – Including hams, bacon, and cooked meats, all processed in-house.
We proudly supply restaurants, supermarkets, hotels, rest homes, and retailers throughout Southland, Otago, Canterbury, and as far north as Auckland. Our reputation is built on providing the best value in meat, backed by excellent customer service and dependable supply.

Hereford Prime Heritage
In the early 1990s, John Flynn partnered with industry leaders to create the Hereford Prime brand — a label dedicated to delivering consistently superior beef. Working with PGG Wrightson, strict supply contracts ensure year-round availability and quality standards such as pH levels and carcass consistency. This innovation has set a benchmark for beef quality across New Zealand.

Retail Shop
Our shop allows customers to purchase meat in the quantities they need, with full confidence in freshness and quality. From the early days when customers brought their own plates for meat, through to today’s convenient retail packs, one thing has never changed — our customers’ needs always come first.

Trusted Quality
Bowmont Wholesale Meats Ltd. employs a team of 30 dedicated staff and is MAF accredited with the Q Mark from the Beef & Lamb Marketing Board. These accreditations reflect our ongoing commitment to the highest standards of food safety, processing, and product quality.

While John and Judith Flynn are gradually stepping back from day-to-day operations, they continue to play an active role in the business. With their decades of knowledge and experience, they are proud to see the next generation carrying Bowmont’s legacy forward.
